Elberfeld was a Bergisch city in the eastern Rhineland until it was merged with four other cities to form today's Wuppertal on August 1, 1929. Today, Elberfeld, as a district of Wuppertal, extends to the districts of Elberfeld, Elberfeld-West and Uellendahl-Katernberg. Since 1975, the district has included some incorporations from the former town of Neviges.
