The Winterscheid church is dedicated to Saint Servatius. His exact biographical details are unknown; he is said to have been born in Armenia at the beginning of the 4th century and died around 384 in Maastricht, Netherlands. His remains are buried there, and a large basilica was built in his honor. He probably became Bishop of Tongeren in 340.
Servatius is best known in popular piety as one of the three so-called "Ice Saints," along with St. Pancras and St. Boniface (in some regions, this is supplemented by "Cold Sophia" one day later). Saint Servatius's feast day in the calendar of saints is May 13th.
