The city originated as a Frisian trading place around the year 800 and until today has been significantly shaped by its seaport, which in the 20th century was the basis for the settlement of larger industrial companies such as the Nordseewerke shipyard and the Volkswagen plant. As a business location, the only county-level city in East Frisia has an overwhelming importance for the region. Since 1973, the city has been a university location. The state planning of Lower Saxony has Emden since 2007 as a center center with subcentral part functions (Wikipedia).
