The castle is the oldest agricultural property in the region and gave the city of Diepenheim its name. It was built in 1648 and has been owned by Baron de Vos van Steenwijk and his family since 1925. You cannot visit the castle itself, but the 180 hectare gardens are freely accessible.

Kasteel Huis te Diepenheim is the oldest castle in Diepenheim and has a rich history. The house was built in 1648 by Berent Bentinck and is located near the built-up area of Diepenheim.

Since 1925, the house has been owned by Baron de Vos van Steenwijk and family. The estate has a total surface area of 180 ha and is freely accessible to walkers. The coat of arms of the Bentinck and Ittersum family with the year 1685 are incorporated on the beautiful castle gate.

      Open to the public?
The house itself and the garden are not accessible.

Part of the estate consists of forest, also called the Sterrebos, this is the part that is accessible to the public. Here you will find beautiful rhododendrons and a large pond.

      A bit of history
The history of the lords of Diepenheim goes back to 1139 when a donation from the Bishop of Utrecht to the church in Oldenzaal takes place. The two brothers, however, regularly quarreled with the Bishop of Munster and when he left for Rome with Emperor Frederick, they invaded his territory. They must have known this, because upon their return the bishop had both Diepenheim House and the family castle Ahaus destroyed. It is possible that all the lords of Diepenheim died in the war, which prompted their sister to take off her monastic habit and marry Hendrik van Dalen. This Hendrik rebuilt Diepenheim.

In 1330 it was mentioned as the property of the Bishop of Utrecht. After a siege and partial demolition in 1536, the current house was built on the same site in 1648 by Bernard Bentinck. It was changed considerably in the 17th and 18th centuries and was renovated in 1905. The interior was thoroughly renovated in 1928.

Beautiful castle. Unfortunately you can't get very close to it legally.
