Although the mill is dated 1914, further research shows that this mill was built in 1915 for miller H. Berends. Before that it was in Amersfoort (Nefkens' mill).

De Hoop is a flour mill from Amersfoort that was rebuilt here in 1914. Many village mills in Drenthe were previously located elsewhere and when they became redundant there, they were shipped to Drenthe.

Around 1850 a mill was built on the site where the De Hoop mill in Sleen now stands. This mill was an octagonal groundsailer with a thatched superstructure on stone field walls and a thatched roof. The mill was then on the edge of the heath and was destroyed by fire in 1914.
