The originally Ice Age pond was formerly called Sandsee and has an area of around 2.5 hectares.
A prominent resident was the writer Erich Kästner, who lived in a semi-detached house (Parkstrasse 3a) from 1964–1966 with his partner and son at the time. Today the forest lake is popular with joggers, walkers and - with its playground - with children.
In order to prevent the lake from tipping over ecologically, in 2016/2017 the lake was desedged by sediment deposits and dirt loads up to 2.5 meters thick.
