The city is said to have been known since 763 as a resting place for traveling merchants. For the year 830 a wooden church belonging to the Archdiaconate in Verden (Aller) is handed down. In 1162, a Werendagus de Bevenhusen, possibly a Ministeriale, is listed as a witness in a document of Henry the Lion. At times, a castle located in the spot is said to have served as a fortress against the Slavs.
