The name derives from its outward appearance, as one of the rock formations resembles a hooded monk with some imagination. The term "glasses" derived the vernacular from the word glare (glow, shine, glow), since the rock shines with appropriate sunlight. According to legend, at this point a monk and a nun have broken their chastity rule, whereupon they were turned into stone for punishment.

Were very enthusiastic that you have to look absolutely something very at the beginning like a ruin but otherwise very very nice

The Glass Monk (formerly called Thorstein) is about 180 m above sea level. NN high cliff of sandstone in the nearby Halberstadt located Thekenbergen in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt.The rock formation has emerged from the Counts Mountains in the Upper Cretaceous. It clearly dominates the surrounding forest and is therefore visible from afar.

In 1944, the first prisoner commando was housed in the so-called country house (a popular excursion restaurant). In the GDR era it was a restaurant and holiday resort of the VEB Elektroinstallation Sondershausen. Today the plant is in a neglected condition.

The shortest way up here is via a long staircase. Further west there was supposed to be a downhill trail that I couldn't find.

The trail down from the top is a great alternative to the stairs. Once started, there is hardly any escape. The track is very narrow, extremely steep and two large ledges in soft sandy soil.
    A great challenge .😄
