In the vicinity of the Cistercian Abbey of Maulbronn there were around ten stone quarries that played an important role in the Middle Ages. The rich sandstone deposits stretch from Elfinger Berg on the Maulbronn side to the Knittlinger Steige. Extensive yellow sandstone was quarried there, as can be seen in the description of the Maulbronn Oberamt from 1870: “On the old road to Maulbronn, about half an hour southeast of the village, four great quarries have been created, from which excellent Keuper stone was extracted and widely , to Karlsruhe. "
