There was originally a church here from 975, but Duke Leopold of Anhalt had it demolished in 1828. This new church was built in 1828/1829 - the architect Carlo Ignazio Pozzi designed it as an addition to the castle, which was built in the classicist style. In its neo-Romanesque-Byzantine style, it was the first church of its kind in Germany.
