We are eager to discover the historic landscape of the White Nete Valley.
Stung by stories, our walk, which is 80% unpaved, starts at the Vossekot – Geenend in Retie.
Fortunately, it is only a short walk on the paved Geenend.
We cross the playful Boseindsebergen in the company of adventurous mountain bikers.
Wonderful, the peace and quiet awaits us in the river landscape of the valley.
The enchanting landscape consists mainly of swamp forests and soaking wet swamps.
At the boardwalk we have an appointment with the witch Hekselien. Together we walk dry-shod along the Zwarte Nete where we get to know “the Haring, Viennese Putten and the Koeibemdekens”. Playful wooden constructions invite you to explore the river more closely.
The witches' bath doesn't interest us much with these winter temperatures, but the viewing platform over the Witte Nete does. Here you will be introduced to “The landscape of the future”.
We say goodbye to Hekselien and the historic landscape with its wet meadows, meadows and swamps. We are captivated by the picturesque, milling grain water mill of Retie. This water mill was originally a medieval ban mill (more information in the highlight).
We return through the Beverdonkse Heide. In the mosaic landscape of forests, agricultural areas and open plains we pay tribute at the Halifax Memorial. The tragedy that took place here on October 22, 1943 should never be forgotten. An R.A.F. bomber was shot out of the sky here and the seven crew members were killed. They gave their lives for our freedom.
The Sniederspad takes us back to 't Vossekot via coniferous forests and the Duinberg.
Highly recommended…
The 'White and Black Nete Valley' is mouth-watering.
Deck path ensures that you can enter the White Nete Valley with dry feet. Enjoy dry feet of the Zwarte Nete where you get to know "den Haring, Viennese Putten and the Koeibemdekens". Playful wooden constructions invite you to discover the river up close.
