From 1912 to 1914, the mouth of the Geeste on the Weser was widened and deepened as part of an extensive expansion program for the old Bremerhaven port facilities. The water depth of the Geeste was no longer sufficient for the increasing shipbuilding by the Joh. C. Tecklenborg shipyard. A new north pier was built at the entrance to the Geeste estuary. At the end of the pier there was already a much smaller beacon from 1857. It was replaced by the well-proportioned tower for the new beacon with its distinctive red lantern.
The lighthouse and the pier are under monument protection.
