'De IJzeren Kaap', also called 'Kaap Oosterend', was designed in 1854 by the architect Quirinus Harder, who later also designed the Texel Lighthouse. Harder worked as a construction engineer in the pilotage industry and was commissioned to design a cast-iron 'zeekaap', which was visible as a lightless beacon during the day for shipping traffic.

The iron cape is located on the east bank of the island on the dike between Oudeschild and De Cocksdorp. A great route that you can drive completely on the outside of the dike.
The next place inland is Oosterend, which has a small historic town center and nice restaurants and bistros.
