The story of the famous Friedrich I, Barbarossa, is literally tangible on the Boyneburg. Before he died in a crusade in 1190, he held a court day in 1166 and a diet in 1188. Since the castle is said to have been his last place of residence, the route of the Barbarossaweg leads along the castle today. The history of the castle, which is located on the Ringgau plateau, goes back even further. A refugee castle is said to have stood there as early as early history.
