"Although Kemmenau was mentioned as early as 1320 and is perhaps a few centuries older, the village only grew into one municipality in 1816/21. Before that, the larger part belonged to Bad Ems, the smaller part to Dausenau. The prehistoric traces of the The Roman Limes and the prehistoric ring wall on the First run directly behind the village. The name of the place is perhaps derived from "Kemmenate", which means a fortified house on the old road from Bad Ems to the Westerwald. "
