The imposing building directly at the entrance to the old harbor is now known as the "Egyptian Lighthouse," but was actually built by the Venetians in the 16th century.
In Ottoman times around 1839, the 21-meter-high tower was rebuilt under the garrison of Egyptian soldiers and was last extensively restored in 2005. From the lighthouse, you can admire the picturesque Venetian harbor of Chania in all its glory.

Hiking
The current lighthouse was mounted on a trapezoidal base, which has been in use since the Venetian era. During the Turkish occupation, the port of Chania and the lighthouse were neglected and abandoned. In 1839, the Egyptians restored the lighthouse as we see today. The current tower stands at 21m high and is visible within 7 miles.
