The church dates from the 13th century and has since been expanded and renovated several times.

The oldest masonry of the original church dates back to when the city itself was founded. It is not known what the church looked like at the time, but due to its central location in the city center, the church was obviously of great importance.

In 1649 the church was destroyed by a fire in the church. What you see now is a vaulted church interior that was built in the 1650s.

Grenaa Kirke is dedicated to St. Gertrude, the patron saint of travelers (including cats).

The church is made of monk stone and granite squares. A renovation gave the church its characteristic pinnacle (1870s).

The oldest altarpiece is originally from Holmens Kirke in Copenhagen. It was bought from the city's residents to protect it from the fires and bombs that ravaged Copenhagen. The church was newly restored in 2001.
