Location and history: The Kräherwald is an elongated forest area between the Botnanger saddle and the Killesberg in Stuttgart. Its width extends from the northern part of Stuttgart West, where the Doggenburg and the Bismarkturm are also located, down to Botnang and the Feuerbacher valley.
There are two interpretations for the name Kräherwald.
Either this name points to a forest in which crows nested or it goes back to the term "crows" which means something like brushwood.
The main species of wood in this forest was and is oak. In the 19th century the forest was used as an oak peeling forest.
The oaks were felled and peeled every 30 years. The bark was sold as tanning (tan) and the wood as firewood.
The oaks sprouted again from the rootstocks.
After 30 years it was used again.
This was one of the most profitable forms of forestry in the century before last.
Before that, the Kräherwald was an important grazing forest, which the shepherds of Stuttgart could easily reach with their flocks via the Herdweg.
