<< Cross Church >>
"The Evangelical Kreuzkirche (formerly: Hauptkirche) is the successor building to the Dionysiuskirche.
The establishment of the first Christian parish in Herne probably goes back to the 9th/10th century. century back. Saint Dionysius was the patron saint of the old Romanesque church, which was built around 1100 on the former Haranniplatz and demolished between 1873 (tower) and 1876 (nave). During excavations in 1933/34, traces of at least one previous building of this church were uncovered. After the Reformation, the church was the Lutheran parish church of the parish of Herne.
Since the number of parishioners was constantly increasing, the cornerstone of the current church was laid on October 5, 1873. The ceremonial inauguration took place on December 2nd, 1875.
Before construction work began, there had been significant differences of opinion within the parish about the location of the new church, which delayed the start of construction. The construction costs were more than 300,000 marks.
The Kreuzkirche is 44 meters long and its tower is 57.5 meters high."Jurgen Hagen
