In June 2012, the Lungau was designated by the UNESCO as "Salzburg Lungau Biosphere Reserve and Carinthian Nock Mountains", extending over the two Austrian provinces of Salzburg and Carinthia.

The recognition applies to an alpine landscape that is typical of the Central Alps, with peaks up to 3,000 meters high. In the 1,500 square kilometer area natural and man-made landscapes alternate.
