The Göttingen University Observatory is a historic research institution and, after the founding of Vienna and Graz, the third university observatory in the German-speaking world. It is located in the Göttingen Geismar Highway 11 and is now affiliated to the Department of Physics of the University of Göttingen. 1803 began with the construction of a new observatory outside the city wall. As a result of the Napoleonic wars, however, the building could be completed only in 1816 under the Building Council Justus -Heinrich Müller. The building was in the classicist style and had a dome, which was not used for observation purposes, but was only an architectural stylistic device. The first director of the observatory was Carl Friedrich Gauss. (...)
In 1819 a meridian circle was set up in the observatory. For this purpose, two so-called meridian signs (miren) were set up a few kilometers north and south of the observatory. With these markings visible from the observatory, the meridian circle could be aligned. (...)
In 1833, Gauss and Wilhelm Weber set up the world's first telegraph connection by connecting the observatory with the Physical Cabinet in Papendiek in the center of Göttingen's city center. (...) In 1885, the "ornamental dome" was replaced by an observation dome in which a refractor with 15 cm opening was set up. For a larger instrument, a well-grounded telescope pillar would have been necessary.
The dome was renovated in 2008.
