The "Hohe Venn" is a high moor with such special flora and fauna, that here everything is under nature protection. It is Belgium's largest nature reserve.

The landscape here is very open and overgrown with typical moorland plants. I have not tried it, but I'm pretty sure you would immediately sink knee deep into the mud as soon as you leave one of the trails. The view up here definitely makes for "wow" moments.

The plateau of the High Fens is one of the last pieces of wilderness in our regions. It is located in and around the Eupen-Monschau-Malmedy-Spa quadrangle. The core of the area is a ridge of old slate, with peaks up to 694 meters above sea level, the highest part of the entire Benelux. 10,000 years ago – after the last ice age – the first raised bogs formed on the poor, poorly permeable soil.

Villages and small towns dot the flanks of the high plateau, but the core of the area, the size of half a province, is quite unspoilt, with no habitation or traces of agriculture. In the desolate primordial landscape on top of the plateau, the vastness and raw emptiness dominate, especially in winter. A rugged environment, but a dream for true hikers and nature lovers!

The soil here is extremely nutrient-poor, the climate downright arctic. Everything grows very slowly here. That can hardly be otherwise in an area where the winter lasts 8 months and where only 4 months are reserved for spring, summer and autumn…

By far our favorite region in Belgium for cycling.

Great viewing platform from which you have a great view over the Hohe Venn.
