Fort van Lier built in the period from 1877 - 1890 to strengthen the National Reduit Antwerp. Fort came under heavy fire in the period of September 29 and October 2, 1914. On October 4, the fortress lost its strategic importance.
The fortress is not open to the general public. A shooting club has taken up residence in the fort. Only a tour around the wet canal is possible.

Today the fort is used by many associations, such as the shooting clubs Fort Lier, Ledo and Police Brothering Lier, an archers guild, a radio association and a fishing club. The area within the fort moat is only accessible to members and visitors of the established clubs.
Cyclists can discover the fortress together with the Fort of Duffel, the Fort of Lier, the Fort of Koningshooikt, the Fort of Sint-Katelijne-Waver and the Fort of Walem via the route 'Langs Nete en groenstreek' or you can create your own route. set up thanks to the bicycle nodes. Fort van Lier is located at junction 40.
You can take a walk in the area on foot thanks to the hiking nodes. The fort is located at junction 23 of the 'Kempense Netevallei' network. From here you can make beautiful walks in a varied environment.

Beautifully maintained Fort and can still be viewed with an interpreter, to be reserved through the municipality.
