Eltville not only shines through the charming backdrop of its ancient buildings, but also exudes a southern flair.

The 24-meter-high residential tower of the former Electoral Castle is the landmark of Eltville on the Rhine that can be seen from afar. The building dates back to Baldwin of Luxembourg, who was first appointed Archbishop of Mainz in 1320 (and again in 1328) by the Mainz Cathedral Chapter. Baldwin, who was not confirmed by the Pope, held this office with interruptions until 1336, but resided in Eltville, not least because there had been conflicts between him and the citizens of Mainz.
