The Hauptwache is the center of the city and the most famous square in the Main metropolis, which was first called Paradeplatz, then Schillerplatz.

The baroque guard building that gave its name to the entire square was built as a military station in 1729-30 by the city architect Johann Jakob Samhaimer. It was the seat of the city guard and also included a prison. Here sat among others the councilor Senckenberg (brother of the natural scientist) and the notorious robber chief "Schinderhannes".

The popular Hauptwache café has been located in the historic guard building since 1904. In 1944 the building burned down completely after heavy bombing raids. In 1954 it was reopened and in 1967 it was completely dismantled during the construction of the subway and then rebuilt a year later above the subway station. The historic Hauptwache café went back into operation for its visitors. The square has been redesigned several times. Its current shape is characterized by a large opening in the floor, which the people of Frankfurt also call "the hole" for short. The opening opens up to the B level, an underground shopping arcade below the square, which also serves as access to the underground express train stations.

As part of a large-scale beautification of the square, the hole to the B-level is to be closed again and get its pre-war name "Schillerplatz" back. The statue of the poet Schiller, banished to the Taunusanlage, is to return to the center of the square, analogous to the Goethe monument. 🚴‍♂️
