In 1986 the Association of Amateur Astronomers of the Saarland decided to build its own observatory. In five years of construction it was at a height of 584 meters above sea level. NN erected on the Peterberg in northern Saarland. The requirements for the location were sufficient darkness, far away from large industrial settlements, low horizon brightness, free all-round visibility and good transport links. Far away from disturbing light influences, it has been used for amateur astronomical work since its inauguration on September 9, 1997. The main instrument is a Planewave CDK2O: an astrograph with a 50 cm primary mirror. diameter of the Cassegrain type, corrected according to Dall-Kirkham, with a focal length of 3,454 mm (f 6.8). An Astro-Physics Starfire APO serves as the guide scope: a refractor with a 15.2 cm opening (6 inches) and a focal length of 1,300 mm (f 8.5). In addition, portable devices are available for observation. The observatory quickly became a crowd puller. With 2,800 visitors a year, the question of an expansion soon arose. The active phase of expansion began on April 29, 2003, only 5 years after completion. In addition to the previous lecture room for approx. 40 people, only the club room for the club members existed until then. This was moved to the annex to make way for an exhibition room. A second 3.2-meter dome was added to the existing 5.5-meter main dome. Two refractors and a special telescope for observing the sun have found their place in this second dome to expand the field of activity of the observatory.

A public lecture takes place every 1st Saturday. From March to December at 8 p.m. Please note the homepage!

Observations on the telescope are possible when the sky is clear. Technical literature, star maps, astrophotos and meteorites can be purchased on site.

A small observatory with a large outdoor area. Guided tours are also possible, but please note the opening hours on the website.

Great ascent to the observatory from the village of Kastel - approx. 300 vertical meters in one go on grass pavers! Worthwhile on every mountain bike tour in the area!
