How it all came about, our story
Eels have been caught in the Zwischenahner Meer for centuries. In the autumn, sexually mature silver eels leave the sea and migrate back to their traditional spawning grounds. These silver eels are still caught, smoked and sold at the Oldenburg Kramermarkt as Zwischenahner Smoortaale.
At the beginning of the 19th century, this side job of the farmer Friedrich Bruns developed into a lucrative business. The family decided to give up farming and devote themselves entirely to fishing and smoking.
