Almost all crew members of the flight of an AVRO Lancaster MK III with registration number ED449 of the 50th Squadron of the Royal Air Force at Skellingthorpe Air Base in England were killed at this location. On board; 2 Canadian and 5 British crew members. They started at 7:40 p.m. On the way to the Ruhr area (Essen) the aircraft was shot at by Lieutenant Manfred Meurer in his Messerschmitt Me 110 stationed at Venlo Air Base. The Lancaster crashed on the evening of March 12, 1943 at 9:25 p.m. with all her bomb load over the heath of the Aijermeer (today Nieuw Bergen).
