Superlative view of the Sesto Dolomites, satisfying and not demanding ascent, fun descent, wonderful!

A former military road leads from the Silvesteralm up to the Marchkinkele. With an incline of around 10 percent, the path is also feasible for mountain bikers without assistance. At the beginning the path leads through the forest and offers shade every now and then. The demanding terrain of rock and scree is particularly demanding. Breakneck, numerous switchbacks lead up the steep slope towards the summit.
This tour is spectacular. Constantly new views of the mountains and the fascinating serpentine road built into the mountain. Arrived at the top of the ridge, you drive for a while on a plateau towards the summit. Here you don't meet hikers anymore, just a few crazy mountain bikers. No trace of mass tourism far and wide. These peaks lead a shadowy existence within sight of the much-visited Dolomites on the other side of the Puster Valley.
Conclusion: Even the ascent is pure pleasure. If you don't want to start from the valley, you can park your car at an altitude of around 1,550 m at the Silvestertal hiking car park. From here about 1,000 meters in altitude have to be overcome.

The Markinkele is one of the easternmost elevations of the great ridge of the Casies Mountains, which after it runs out towards the Winnebach - Prato Drava border crossing. Of interest only for hiking, it culminates in a rocky tooth at the base of which there are some shelters in reinforced concrete now in ruins, set up by the Italian Army in the 60s to defend the border
