The underwater pools have a base area of about 0.5 km² and are able to absorb the pendulum water volume of 2,000,000 m³. The lakes also serve to drain excess water back into the Mangfall throughout the day. Leitzachwerk 3 was built between 1963 and 1965 in order to use the few meters difference in altitude between the reservoirs and the course of the river to generate energy. With two Kaplan bulb turbines, it achieves an output of between 0.1 MW and 0.38 MW, depending on the water level of the lakes.Source and more info
