The current main building was built in 1513. Originally the castle was called Einhofen and was the ancestral seat of the Ainhover family. The dilapidated castle came to Wolfgang Scherr around 1650, who renovated it until 1661. In 1683 it came to Count Maximilian von Preising, Chamberlain of Bavaria. This called it Maxhofen, got the lower jurisdiction and the recognition of a Hofmark. He built the outbuildings and the castle chapel and separated an associated courtyard, which today still bears the name Einhofen.
In 1771, Minister Josef Ferdinand acquired the Hofmark Maxhofen. Then the property came to Count Tattenbach and later to Count Arco, who saved it from deterioration. In 1903 the Upper Bavaria State Insurance Company was able to acquire Maxhofen Castle, which converted it into a home for the disabled. In 1960 it was sold to the city of Munich, which set up a country school home in the buildings.
