The Mineral Museum has existed in Essen-Kupferdreh since 1984 as a branch of the former Ruhrland Museum in a committed partnership with the Kupferdreh citizenship. It is scientifically supervised by the Ruhr Museum and used in museum education.

With free admission, presentations on the topics "Mammoth, Man and Flint", "The Bone Chamber", "Primeval Animals", "Natural Chamber of Wonder", "Coal - the black gold " and "The Sound of Stones" can be visited and highlights from the geoscientific collection of the Ruhr Museum can be admired. In a diverse program of events, museum educators accompany young and old visitors to bring them closer to the world of stones and minerals as well as the history of the earth and its inhabitants.

Due to its location near the geological hiking trail on Essen's Baldeneysee, the mineral museum is an ideal starting point for excursions to outcrops of the Carboniferous, where you can discover the history of coal formation 300 million years ago. The finds can be further processed in the preparation workshop. The VHS Essen offers special courses for adults as a cooperation partner.

"The branch of the Ruhr Museum was reopened in 2018 and presents a combination of geology, biology and mineralogy that is unique in Germany with free admission. The presentation of meteorites, crystals, minerals, rocks and fossils is particularly popular with families and offers an exciting program of events for young and old visitors, including a fossil rally on the Pörtingssiepen heap on Lake Baldeney."
