The core areas of the nature reserve, which is over 1,000 hectares in size, are characterized by residual moorland and rewetting areas in which animal and plant species typical of raised moorland have found a retreat. The rewetting of the moor area was decided in 1997 as a compensatory measure for the construction of the Papenburg test site, which was built between 1995 and 1998 and is located slightly northeast of today's nature reserve. The area is easy to explore on paths and information boards and you can observe many birds.
