Hans Jakob Fugger - Monument, Augsburg
Hans Jakob Fugger - "Promoter of Science"
The Fugger Monument, erected in 1857 on Fuggerplatz, was paid for by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. The larger-than-life bronze figure on a high stone pedestal represents Hans Jakob Fugger: This great-grandson of Jakob Fugger the Rich left the Fugger family in 1564, heavily indebted. At the court in Munich, the art-loving bankrupt then became a Privy Councilor and President of the Court Chamber, effectively becoming Finance Minister. Because of his debts, Fugger ceded his valuable collection of ancient manuscripts and books to the Duke of Bavaria. This collection became a foundation of the Bavarian State Library.
