Although the formerly proud Hemmerich Castle has been a ruin since a devastating fire shortly after the end of the Second World War, it is still a clearly visible testimony to the castle complex of that time.

After the castle was destroyed by fires in 1869 and 1906, the mansion was rebuilt as a neo-renaissance villa according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Graf Mörner. After a third fire in 1945, triggered by forced laborers released during the Second World War, the castle was only a ruin. Hunold Freiherr von Nordeck zu Nordeck, who lived on the site with his wife until his death in 2004, had some buildings repaired. The site has been uninhabited since 2004. It was acquired by the Stollenwerk family, owners of the canning factory of the same name. Since the death of Josef Stollenwerk in 2016, the castle has been owned by a community of heirs. Until 2018 there were no plans for a new use and the castle continued to deteriorate.

Unfortunately privately owned, so you can only see it from the outside

The origins of the castle date back to 1210. The complex was completely redesigned in the Rhenish Rococo style between 1729 and 1733. Since then, three fires have raged in the castle (1869, 1906, 1945). After the last fire, only a ruin remains of the once proud noble residence. I think Hemmerich Castle is beautiful. Even if it is only preserved as a ruin. So you can guess the old glorious times

"Hemmerich Castle looks back on a turbulent history dating back to Roman settlement.

According to the testimony of the Cologne historian Aegidius Gelenius, the ruins of the medieval knight's castle were still visible in the 17th century. Stones from the "Roman Canal," which ran below Hemmerich, in Kardorf, were used as building materials at the time. These materials can still be seen today in the walls of the castle complex, which has been in ruins since August 1945. However, the exact age of the castle cannot be determined.
In the autumn of 1985, a revealing votive stone with a fully preserved inscription was found not far from the castle. It is attributed to the Roman god of trade and commerce, Mercury.

Of the numerous owners of the castle, special mention must be made of the Knights of Hemberg, who, as ministerials of the Cologne Church, held the office of hereditary treasurer and thus achieved great prestige. Ownership changed frequently through marriage, inheritance, or purchase, so that the castle soon found itself in the hands of Rhenish noblemen, bourgeois merchants, or wealthy clergymen.

While the neighboring Rösberg Castle was designed by the famous Westphalian Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun following the French model as a regular three-winged complex with a spacious courtyard, Hemmerich Castle received a completely different architectural character from an unknown architect due to the local conditions. Under Maria Elisabeth von und zum Pütz, a rural Baroque palace complex was built on the structure of the old knight's estate between 1729 and 1773, surrounding a rectangular courtyard, adjoining a spacious, regular park. The Baroque gate pavilion, which still survives, is reminiscent of a former medieval gate tower, whose portal could probably have been closed with a portcullis.
In 1813, the three sons of von und zum Pütz sold the castle. After another interim owner, the property, with 160 acres of land and 125 acres of forest, has been owned by the von Nordeck zu Nordeck family since 1824.

A few years ago, the current owner had a house built in the park, matching the style of the castle. Some memorabilia were salvaged from the old manor house and adorn the tasteful building.
