The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Czech: Kostel Narození Panny Marie) in Písek (Czech Republic) is one of the city's most important churches, with a rich history and impressive architecture.

History & Architecture

Construction: Mid-13th century (Gothic style), later remodeled in the Baroque style
Original function: Part of a Dominican monastery destroyed in 1419 during the Hussite Wars
Reconstruction: In the 18th century, the church received a Baroque facade and new interior

The church dates from the second half of the 13th century. Originally the church had two low towers, the appearance of which resembled the current lower north tower. At the end of the 15th century, however, the south tower was rebuilt and increased to 72 meters. Today it offers a great view of the city at a height of 42 m.
