The Hirschteich is considered to be one of the three Altmühl sources. However, since this source dries up again and again in dry periods, it is considered unlikely. Since 1904, the Hornauer Weiher has been officially designated as the Altmühl source.

the wonderfully romantic "deer pond" top source of the Altmühl, in the middle of the forest, is simply worth seeing -
very close also the historic forest inn "Wildbad" with a "Skywalk" - since 1497 - the rustic menu is filled with many delicious Franconian delicacies -
Attention: the private access road - seitl.abgehend from the main road
