Hohenwutzen was mentioned for the first time in 1337 together with other villages on the island of Neuenhagen in the Neumark land register under the name Botzow. The village was founded by Slavic settlers in the early Middle Ages. Since its incorporation in 2003, Hohenwutzen has been a district of Bad Freienwalde (Oder).
