The name of the museum is a tribute by the city of Coimbra to its most famous son, Joaquim Machado de Castro, the most important exponent of 18th-century Portuguese sculpture. The former Bishop's Palace and Collections houses a beautiful 12th-century cloister and provides an ideal setting for housing one of Portugal's most complete art collections.
