The first chapel was established in Nieuwenhagen in 1747. Until then, the inhabitants had to rely on the St. Pancratiuskerk in Heerlen or the St. Janskerk in Eygelshoven. In 1700 the church in Schaesberg was completed, which offered a new option, but Nieuwenhagen remained parish dependent on Heerlen. The fact that a church could be built in Schaesberg without any problems was because Schaesberg belonged to the Spanish and therefore Catholic part of Limburg. Heerlen and Nieuwenhagen, however, were States and therefore had Protestant administrators.
