The Lochbach, formerly also called Fountain Plate, is a 9 km long left channel of the Lech before and in Augsburg. The name Brunnenlech probably goes back to the fact that the water power of the canal served in the waterworks at the Red Gate to supply the wells of Augsburg. Their drinking water was not drawn there from the Lochbach, but from the Brunnenbach. The Lochbach was already in the Middle Ages a canalized branch of the Lech, which supplied the branched sewer system of Augsburg with use of water.
