Opposite the Scharfeneck is one of the weirdest places in the Helenental: the Urtelstein. Here the Schwechat formed the so-called "vortex", which often pulled the coachman, the steeds and the wagon into the depths. The road had to overcome the steep rock before the breakthrough broke out in 1826. Especially in winter this repeatedly led to crashes.
An eerie place Place of jurisdiction?
The legend also said that this was an ancient execution site where the guilty were thrown from the rock into the Vortex of Schwechat. Here, according to legend, the Knights Templar have been executed for their idolatry.
The reality was not so grim. Medieval cities had a judgment stone on all important entry roads. There, the local magistrates of the surrounding villages had to hand over imprisoned criminals to the magistrate, because only he had the right of blood jurisdiction.
Witches in Helenental?
Of course, there are also mystical interpretations to the processing marks in the rock. Some say they are the remains of caves created by druids and witches here. Either way. The Urtelstein remains an uncanny place!
