The area west of Machtlfing is part of the Andechs Ridge and is characterized by numerous worm-glacial retreat and end moraine trains, entire fields of tumuli and drumlins and swamp bogs in between. It is part of the FFH area "Moraine landscape between Ammersee and Starnberger See" and is home to many rare plant and animal species.
