The Kalmthoutse Heide is one of the oldest and largest nature reserves in Flanders. It's a rare example of the once-vast European heathland. The Kalmthoutse Heide is a valuable relic of the once vast Kempen heath landscape. The total surface area is 1,830 ha, of which 861 ha is a 'state nature reserve', managed by the Waters en Bossen board. The heathland stretches around the central dune system, with here and there smaller sand hills, the whole 'speckled' with a few larger and smaller fens and enclosed by a belt of extensive pine forests that, as it were, worm a buffer zone against the never-ending building frenzy.
