The castle Gröningen from the years around 933-940, which had been built on the remains of a ruined Wallburg, was destroyed in 1140 under the leadership of Count Palatine Frederick II of Sommerschenburg. In its place, a new castle was built in 1253, which became the residence of the bishops of Halberstadt in 1363. From 1535 on, they rebuilt and expanded this castle into one of the most important Renaissance castles in the region in the form of a four-wing complex. The sketch shows the Gröninger Residence and Renaissance Palace around 1600. Around 1680 began the decline of Gröningen Castle, which ended in 1817 with the demolition. A portal of the castle is today in Halberstadt, district Emersleben. It is made of sandstone and is a round arch portal. On the sides of the arch are heads.

Except for the gatehouse and the stone bridge over the former moat is hardly anything of the former castle to recognize.
