The town hall was built in 1477 on the site of a purchased town house on the market. Just 60 years later it was demolished and rebuilt in Renaissance style from 1538-46, much larger according to plans by the Dresden master builder Bastian Kramer. The city fires in 1616 and 1842 severely damaged the building. After the second city fire, the town hall was rebuilt according to the plans of the famous master builder Gottfried Semper in the Renaissance style with a finely structured gable and slender clock tower.
On the left, on the gable end of the town hall, a magnificent flight of stairs leads to the podium, which is covered by three arches with a canopy like a canopy. In the past, the newly elected councilors had to introduce themselves to the residents from the platform of the outside staircase, the "Büttelkanzel".
The parapet is decorated with relief portraits of Duke George the Bearded, who significantly supported the building of the town hall, and his wife Barbara, a Polish princess. In the intermediate fields are the coats of arms of the Saxon possessions of the Duke: Altenburg / Landsberg, Pleißenland / Orlamünde, Palatinate to Thuringia and Saxony, in the 9th field follows the coat of arms of Oschatz.

The facade of the town hall was renewed in 1914 and 1992-94, including the roof and tower.
The interior of the town hall has been redesigned several times.
