The cobbler boy at the entrance of the restaurant "Schuhmacherort" was created in 1984 by Siegfried J. Assmann. He commemorates the shoemaking industry, because the shoemaker's village used to be a craftsmen's street, mainly for shoemakers and tanners. In 1846 there were 158 master shoemakers in Heide with 166 journeymen.

At the beginning of the street there is a statue of a shoemaker boy.
In the middle of the 19th century, the popular restaurant mile was a craft street where shoemakers and tanners primarily practiced their craft. In their honor, the painter and sculptor Siegfried J. Assmann created the bronze sculpture of the shoemaker boy, right at the entrance to the Altstadtgasse.

When you do the math, something amazing comes out: in 1845 Heide had around 5,396 inhabitants. These included 158 master shoemakers and 166 journeymen.
So much concentrated competence deserves recognition: The shoemaker's boy at the beginning of the old town street is a reminder that the "shoemaker's town" in the middle of the 19th century was a craftsman's street where mainly cobblers and tanners practiced their craft.
