Citadel of Besançon

The Citadelle de Besançon is an impressive fortress located on Mont Saint-Étienne, high above the city of Besançon.
Construction of the Citadelle began in 1668 under the direction of the French military engineer Vauban, who is known for his fortifications. The fortress served as an important military stronghold and played a crucial role in the defense of France's eastern borders.

The citadel of Besançon covers twelve hectares on a site whose strategic importance is evoked from 58 BC. BC, by Julius Caesar, built 1668-1693 on Mount St. Stephen, one of the hills that constitute the natural protections of the capital of Franche-Comté. It overhangs over 100 m the old town and offers a great view of Besançon and its surroundings.
