Today, however, only a few beech trees grow on the mountain near Aukrug, as almost the entire forest stock was cut down before the 20th century. The Kurt and Erika Schrobach Foundation acquired the area in 2008 and since then has been carrying out various measures to develop a natural forest of beech and other deciduous trees. Together with the nature conservation ring Aukrug e.V., it also ensures the preservation of large heathland areas. The Boxberg and its surroundings offer opportunities for excursions of various kinds. For explorers there is a forest and adventure trail, for athletes a fitness and jogging track and for horse lovers there is a bridle path. In all ways, the area around the Boxberg can be ideally explored. For the little ones there is a playground at the foot of the hill, and the hill itself is always a popular destination for sleigh riders in winter when the weather is fine. On the summit, the mountain also offers a magnificent view over the Aukrug nature park.naturpark-aukrug.com/aktiv-unterwegs/schoene-ecken/boxberg.html
