A traffic route has probably existed here since the 2nd century. The Kölnische Landstrasse through Wülfrath was first mentioned in 1065: as a strata coloniensis, it connected the abbey in Essen-Werden with Cologne. Merchants used the route as a trade route. They received protection from accompanying troops provided by the Archbishop in Cologne. With ravines like this one it was certainly a reassuring feeling instead of being defenseless against robbers from both sides...
